What is Sub Ohm / Sub Ohming?

Sub Ohm vaping makes up a huge part of the vaping world, industry and community today.

Before the arrival of all these shiny new sub ohm tanks that make it accessible for anyone to sub ohm, sub ohming was only available to the hardcore vapers that were prepared to take the time to build and prime their coils.

What is an Ohm?

In simple terms, an ohm is the measure of the resistance of a coil. The symbol for this is Ω, and it is commonly known that standard replacement tanks/clearomisers for MTL (mouth-to-lung) vaping are rated between 1.2Ω to 2.0Ω. More recently, this type of coil is referred to as ‘plus ohm’.

A kit is considered sub ohm when the resistance of the coil measures less than 1.0Ω. For example, the popular Smok TV12 Prince tank offers coil choices between 0.40Ω to 0.150Ω. The well-known Aspire Cleito Exo tank is compatible with 0.160Ω coils

Sub Ohm Coils And The Difference They Make

Sub Ohm Kits are more powerful than classic vape kits because when the resistance of the coil is reduced, there is an increase in the amount of electrical current. With a higher electrical current the coil can heat up quicker and reach a higher temperature due to the increased speed with which the energy is reaching the coil. Due to the coils being able to reach a higher temperature, more e-liquid is going to be vaporised and when combined with different airflows, an increase in cloud production and flavour is generated.

Most sub ohm kits/tanks require you to use a DTL (direct-to-lung) inhalation method, which could take some getting used to - especially if you’re an ex-smoker and are used to mouth-to-lung inhalation. Although most sub ohm kits/tanks are predominantly DTL inhalation, there are some that will let you choose your own preference on inhalation.

Why Sub Ohm?

Some vapers find that once they have used kits within the 1.2Ω - 2.0Ω range, they require more of a ‘hit’ from their setup. Most sub ohmers reduce their e-liquid nicotine mg when using sub ohm tanks/devices because of the bigger, punchier ‘hit’ they experience when they vape. This delivers more nicotine into the bloodstream, so higher nicotine strengths would be too intense for sub ohm vaping

Sub ohm vaping is also great for flavour delivery and of course cloud production - which can be controlled with adjustable airflow. Sub ohm devices tend to have many more features than standard e-cigarettes, and this is so sub ohm vapers can personalise and adapt their vaping experience to their specific needs and preferences.

What E-Liquid Can Be Used With Sub Ohm Devices?

Sub ohm devices work perfectly when paired with higher VG e-liquids due to their larger coil sizes. High VG E-Liquids provide smoother, more flavoursome vapour which is great when vaping at higher wattages.

You can also use 50/50 E-Liquids in sub ohm devices as they are designed for universal use across classic and sub ohm kits.

What Types Of Sub Ohm Mods are there?

There is a huge range of different devices and mods out there - just check out our fantastic range to see for yourself. Most devices fall into two categories: Mechanical Mods, and Regulated Mods (which are available with integrated batteries and replaceable rechargeable batteries).

Regulated mods are probably the most popular type of sub ohm device and are commonly used by those who are new to the practise pf sub ohm vaping. Regulated mods have integrated batteries which are rechargeable via a USB cable.

Mechanical mods require advanced knowledge of battery safety and ohms law and should not be used by novice vapers. Because these types of devices are not regulated, when used incorrectly they can be dangerous so education before purchasing or using one is an absolute MUST!
